You get the point – the idea of the structured interview is simple. The interviewer asks questions in a standard order and format to all participants to ensure that questions are framed in the same way and that all participants receive an identical experience. As in the example above, structured interviews can hold both quantitative and qualitative properties. Quantification is possible when answers to structured interview questions are closed (‘yes’ or ‘no’) or pre-set (such as Q3 in the example we provide above). Much like an online quantitative survey, which may list options from which the participant can choose (see Chapter 4), structured interviews can offer a similar experience. The structured interview enables researchers to add power to the findings by quoting statistical significance from a large aggregate of participants.

What structured interviews lack in depth of answers, they make up for in standardisation, reliability, credibility of research data, and time convenience (for both the researcher and the participant). As a rule of thumb, the more the researcher wishes to gain comparable data across people and across sites, the more standardised and therefore quantitative an interview tends to become. In contrast, the more the researcher wants to gather in-depth information about how individuals or groups see the world, the more he or she veers towards qualitative unstructured interviewing.
